Baby Loves Summer by Karen Katz

I always talk about these seasonal books. I just think they’re a fantastic way of introducing the seasons to very young children. They’re bright and simple with lovely lift the flap surprises. In this edition. We follow baby as she enjoys the sunshine, eats ice cream and splashes in her pool.

Summer is Here by Heidi Pross Gray

Another fantastic seasonal series of books. Pross Grey takes us on a multi sensory journey through the seasons, using poetic language and repetition to describe the sights, sounds, textures, smells and tastes of each season. The illustrations are like a gallery of seasonal art which really put you in the mood for Summer’s joys.

My Friend Harry by Kim Lewis

A beautifully illustrated story about friendship. As a little boy prepares to start school, we see him enjoy his last summer with his soft toy elephant. This book really creates a sense of nostalgia for the freedoms of childhood. And reminds young children starting school of the permanency of home.

Pirates Love Underpants by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort

There’s just something about Pirates and desert islands that get me in the mood for summer. It must be all the sand, sea and adventure. This instalment of the franchise, sees the naughty pirates seek the treasured pants of gold and takes us on an rhythmic adventure through their quest.

Sunflower House by Eve Bunting

In this rhythmic and beautifully illustrated book, a young boy uses his imagination to create a sunflower house from a circle of sunflowers. Strong theme of life cycles as the boy collects the seeds at the end of the summer, ready to plant the following spring.

Summer Days and Nights by Wong Herbert Yee

Similar to the set up of Baby Loves Summer, but this time we follow and older child as she explores and appreciates the small beautiful things that Summer has to offer both during the day and at night. Lovely, simple yet descriptive rhyming language makes this a joy to listen to and read.

These are just a small selection of the hundreds of summer themed books available. Please leave your favourites below in the comments.
